Our Home Away From Home |
Over the years we have had a variety of recreational traveling homes.
Our current RV is a 35 foot '93 Holiday Rambler Class A motor home.
This motor home, which we bought on eBay, had only 41,000 miles on it when we got it. The seller only overstated the condition some, and did fix a couple things to make it right when we took delivery. It is in good shape considering some amount of "normal wear and tear" (cover-all description used by seller for many little things, like faded carpet, some scratches, etc.).
Purchases we made over the past year to make this our home on the road and to make this trip possible have included:
- Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar and Brackets and lights cabling
- US Gear "Unified Tow Brake" system for the towed vehicle
- Protect-A-Tow system to keep rocks from messing up the car.
- DVD/VCR combo unit for living room TV
- LCD screen TV (plus a shelf for it) and DVD player for rear bedroom
- A full set of tires (old ones had lots of little cracks, one was really bad)
- Misc small repairs and maintenance (replaced fluids, radio antenna, relief valve for water heater, etc.)
The tow setup connections consist of a tow bar, safety cables, lights cable, brake control cable, and the "Protect-A-Tow" netting. All this takes about 10 minutes to connect up. It took a few weekends to get it all installed and working though. The car seems to follow along quite well.
During Spring Break, we made a "short trip" to Dallas (~1000 miles each way) to visit friends down there. This allowed us to get a feeling for what else needs to be done before taking off on the adventure to Alaska. Generally this trip went pretty well. We had a good time and were able to try everything out like we will use it on the road, including towing our car. Only minor things needed to be adjusted.
